Series II Missions, for Grades 1-2, were developed to accommodate the needs of emergent readers. Curriculum in Series II is designed to nurture and reinforce reading skills while still delivering science-filled content.

A glimpse into the Series II Mission curricula shows several features that help early readers succeed.

Series II For Grades 1-2

Students in Series II follow developmentally appropriate curriculum that’s bound in notebooks. These instructions are a stepping stone between the pictorial directions of Series I and the copy-rich content of Series III and IV. While all instructions are written, they are accompanied by graphics, pictures, and an audio CD that reads the directions along with students.

Every Mission includes relevant, engaging, hands-on activities to introduce and reinforce the science concepts of the curriculum. Students are free to explore and follow written and graphical directions to complete activities.

Teamwork is integral to the completion of any Mission. In Series II, just as in Series I, students share responsibility in all activities.

Missions’ versatile learning environment offers Series II students either a workstation or the MAT environment for completion of Mission curriculum.

The Home Link activities, called Backpack Science, send Mission concepts home with students for further exploration. The backpack includes a page of activities and a nonfiction book. Activities require items normally found in the home.

Emergent Readers

Series II Missions focus on stimulating the reading ability of students in Grades 1-2. Series II curriculum text (example above) is supported by graphics, pictures, and audio to help young readers connect words with their meaning.

Teamwork

Why emphasize teamwork? When students work together to complete a Mission, they practice lifelong skills such as communication, cooperation, and responsibility.
